CORONARY ARTERY BYPASS

It is now widely accepted that approximately 50 per cent of patients
undergoing mitral valve repair and/or replacement surgery and up to 20
per cent of patients undergoing coronary artery bypass surgery (CABG)
also have AF. Surgeons believe that it is appropriate to treat the
patients' atrial fibrillation as a secondary outcome, while the patient
is being primarily treated for mitral valve disease or coronary vessel
obstruction.

used in the subxyphoid approach to make lesions on the epicardial
surface of the heart. In this procedure, the device is fed through a
tiny incision just below the patient's sternum and advanced through an
opening in the pericardial sac to reach the target epicardial location.
What is the default CryoAblation temperature?

Can I freeze coronary arteries when performing surgery such as coronary artery bypass grafting? It is never a good idea to ablate, irrespective of energy sources, delicate structures such as coronary arteries, phrenic nerves, or the esophagus. As a general rule, however, cryo energy can be used in low doses around these structures without causing permanent damage. The reason is that the protein structure of biological tissue is not denatured by cryo; hence, cryo will kill the cells, but not damage the ultrastructure or 'scaffolding' of those cells. This means that tissue that has been treated with cryo can heal itself under certain circumstances. This is the reason cryosurgery has acquired a reputation as "forgiving" and safe energy source. This fact is true only up to a point and is where the reversible vs. irreversible nature of cryosurgery injury can be used to advantage in selected tissue. At extreme durations, cycles and low temperatures, the injury is irreversible.
