This research seeks to advance the mechanistic understanding of ocean biogeochemistry and its role in the climate system. We apply observation-based methods that enable the accurate quantification of particle fluxes in the ocean and of particle accumulation on the sea floor on a range of spatiotemporal scales. A particular focus is on particulate organic carbon.

Job Summary Reporting to the Principal Investigator, the Biogeochemistry Technician will be assisting in lab work and sea-going field work. The technician will be working in the Marine Geochemistry Laboratory at Dalhousie University, where they will be operating analytical instruments and making geochemical measurements. They will also participate in expeditions at sea and work together with a team of students and researchers.

Key Responsibilities
  • Sample preparation and analysis of marine sediments, seawater, and other materials in the lab while safely and efficiently following and optimizing geochemical protocols.
  • Gravimetric preparation of internal standards and dilution series. Operating, maintaining, and optimizing analytical methodologies.
  • Data reduction, error and data analysis. Preparation of standard operating procedures and maintaining equipment and ordering supplies for the lab.
  • Assisting in sample collection in coastal and open ocean waters, packing equipment and organizing shipments.
  • Training and supporting students and other lab and instrument users.


Note

On campus role: Due to operational requirements, the successful applicant is required to work in-person on campus.

Required Qualifications
  • Bachelor or a Masters degree in ocean science, earth or environmental science, chemistry, or related field.
  • Ability to multi-task, optimize methodologies, adopt new methodologies.
  • Excellent verbal and written communication skills.
  • Ability to work effectively in a team and also independently.
