How can years of research be summarized in just three minutes? That was the challenge faced by postdoctoral scholars at the UCalgary’s seventh annual Postdoc Research Slam , a dynamic competition where innovation meets storytelling.
This year’s competition saw an impressive 49 abstract submissions with 12 finalists advancing to the final round to present their work before a panel of judges and a general audience. Participants were evaluated based on their communication style, comprehension, and audience engagement; skills that are essential in bridging the gap between academic research and public understanding.
Winning strategies: 1st place
Dr. Rachael Coon , PhD ( Faculty of Veterinary Medicine ), secured first place with her compelling presentation, "Keeping an Eye on Calves: Developing an Automated Monitoring System for Newborn Beef Cattle." Reflecting on her experience, she highlighted the importance of networking and community building through events like the Research Slam and offered advice for future participants:
2nd place
Second place went to Dr. Hao Zhou, PhD ( Faculty of Science ) for his presentation, "From Battlefield to Hospital: A Simple Solution for Mustard Gas Detection." Dr. Zhou shared his enthusiasm for the event, stating,"The Postdoc Research Slam is an amazing opportunity to share your research with a broad audience and improve your science communication skills. My advice is to focus on storytelling to make your research easier for the public to understand. Practicing with colleagues and friends really helped me prepare for the presentation. If you are thinking about applying, go for it! It’s a fun and rewarding experience."
3rd place
Third place was awarded to Dr. Mannthalah Abubaker , PhD ( Cumming School of Medicine ), for her inspiring presentation, "Harnessing Stem Cells for Blood Vessel Repair and Regeneration." Dr. Abubaker emphasized the value of the competition for refining communication skills and connecting with the broader community:

The People’s Choice Award went to Dr. Jonathan Low, PhD ( Faculty of Kinesiology ), for his presentation, "From Fear to Hope: Transforming Our Understanding of Cancer Through Research and Exercise."Now in its seventh year, the Postdoc Research Slam has become a key event in the university’s postdoctoral community providing a glimpse into the groundbreaking research happening at the university and offering postdoctoral researchers an invaluable opportunity to hone their public speaking skills, gain recognition for their work, and connect with colleagues across disciplines.
The event was attended by a diverse audience, including faculty members, students, and staff, all’of whom were inspired by the passion and expertise of the participants. The University of Calgary continues to support its postdoctoral researchers through initiatives like the Research Slam, ensuring they have the tools and opportunities to thrive in their academic and professional journeys.
