Your opportunity:

The Human Research Ethics Unit (HREU) oversees ethics in human research and provides administrative support to the University’s Research Ethics Boards (REBs) and to researchers in the development, review, and oversight of research involving human participants. Under direct supervision of the Manager Human Research Ethics, the Research Ethics Administrator provides administrative support to the University’s REBs and HREU staff. The Research Ethics Administrator is also the first point of contact for general inquiries and provides detailed information to researchers and members of the community on research ethics and related institutional processes, policies, and practices.

Your responsibilities will include:

  • Act as a resource and first point of contact for communications with the Human Research Ethics Unit, including ethics-related queries
  • Responding to enquiries within the defined scope of the role and redirecting as appropriate
  • Handling sensitive and/or confidential information
  • Providing detailed information on processes, policies, and procedures
  • Keeping well-informed on policies, rules, regulations and guidelines
  • Coordinating meeting schedules, agendas, materials, action and follow-up items
  • Resolving issues within the scope of the role and escalating problems as required
  • Advising on University, Sponsor and regulatory agency policies and procedures


 

Essential Qualifications:

  • Bachelor’s Degree or acceptable combination of equivalent experience.
  • Minimum (3) three years’ experience in administration, human research ethics administration is preferred
  • Experience coordinating committee or board meetings
  • Experience taking and drafting minutes
  • Experience drafting letters and/or correspondence on behalf of the committees or boards
  • Experience reviewing research ethics protocols for compliance
  • Experience reviewing researchers’ responses to ensure compliance with relevant regulations and polices
  • Experience using electronic REB systems
  • Knowledge of Tri-Council Policy Statement: Ethical Conduct for Research Involving Humans- TCPS 2 (2022) and other research ethics-related guidance documents, regulations and policies
  • Excellent computer skills including MS Office Suite (O365), and Adobe Acrobat
  • Strong critical thinking skills: ability to objectively analyze information and form a reasoned judgment or solve problems
  • Strong organizational and time-management skills, with experience managing multiple priorities under tight deadlines
  • Proven ability to exercise sound judgment, tact, and diplomacy in sensitive or complex situations.
  • Strong written and verbal communication skills, including the ability to produce clear, concise, and accurate written communication tailored to academic and public audiences
  • Demonstrated initiative, and ability to contribute effectively and positively in a high functioning team environment as well as working independently
  • Excellent at building rapport and developing positive relationships with diverse stakeholders including REB Members, faculty researchers, students and research staff
