General Purpose

In keeping with our Institutional commitment to reconciliation and decolonization and the support for First Nations, Inuit, and Métis learners, the Indigenous Student Advisor plays a critical role in providing holistic support to Indigenous students through advising, counselling, and programming.

 

Duties and Responsibilities

Reporting to the Manager, Indigenous Student Centre and working closely with the Indigenous Program Coordinators, the Advisor acts as a primary contact for Indigenous learners from orientation through to graduation and the transition to the workforce or graduate school. The Advisor serves as a trusted advocate and coach, providing expert and individualized support to Indigenous learners, and collaborates with relevant campus and community partners to direct students to resources as required. Through campus collaboration and by conducting research into promising practices, the Advisor develops and implements innovative initiatives in response to the emerging needs of First Nations, Inuit, and Métis learners. 

 

The Advisor provides advocacy, advisement, counselling, and programming support to First Nations, Inuit, and Métis students experiencing personal, transition, academic, and financial concerns, and mental health challenges, including direct interventions as well as referrals to facilitate the uptake of other campus and community services; explaining and clarifying institutional policies and expectations to students.  

 

The Advisor is expected to document contacts, interventions and programming activities; formulate intervention plans; and analyze statistical data. Through maintaining productive and collaborative relationships with academic and student service areas, the Advisor fosters adaptive and meaningful support networks for Indigenous students both on and off campus. Representing the Indigenous Student Centre and the department of Student Experience, the Advisor acts as both a resource and active participant on institutional committees and speaks in public forums on the support needs of Indigenous students and available resources.  

 

For this position, preference will be given to qualified First Nations, Inuit, and Métis individuals. Applicants who self-identify as First Nations, Inuit, Métis, or Indigenous will be asked to confirm their Indigenous citizenship/membership and/or ancestral and kinship connections to a recognized and inherent Indigenous nation, community, treaty,Öland claim, territory or region through the confidential  Indigenous Identity Confirmation process  facilitated by Indigenous Initiatives. 

 

Requirements

In order to be successful in this role, the incumbent is required to have: 

• A Master’s degree in Social Science, Indigenous Studies, Social Work, or Higher Education and previous experience in the Indigenous education field; or an equivalent combination of education and experience. 

• Experience in des­igning and implementing advising strategies and programs that promote the wellbeing of First Nations, Inuit, and Métis students; and expertise in providing advisement to students regarding all forms of discrimination, microaggressions, racism, family relationships, mental health challenges, and identity development is critical.  

• Experience assisting ­Indigenous students with navigating support systems where multiple service providers are involved, and formal training in counselling skills is an asset. 

• Ability to act as a leader and advocate when multi-disciplinary teams of professionals are called together for case consultations. 

• Experience with interpreting and explaining a broad range of policies and protocols is critical, as is a demonstrated knowledge of funding policies (e.g. Third Party Sponsorship) and processes.  

• Highly developed communication skills, including experience working with confidential information, the ability to de-escalate emotionally volatile situations, collaboration, and consummate political savvy and diplomacy. 

• Excellent research, assessment, evaluation and presentation skills, and highly developed skills in organization, time management, and problem solving. 

• Intermediate to advanced level Microsoft365, MS Word, Excel and PowerPoint.

The target hiring salary for this position is minimum and up to 96% of midpoint for the salary grade.
