General Purpose

The Urolith lab, Microscopy Services, provides analysis of the composition of veterinary uroliths for client veterinarians to aid in the long-term treatment of the affected animal.

 

Duties and Responsibilities

The successful applicant will be responsible for: receiving, organizing and preparing uroliths for analysis; scheduling incoming submissions to ensure stated turn-around times are met; accurately analyzing the chemical composition of uroliths using a variety of microscopic methods combined with case history data; reporting results to clients via electronic methods within client-defined deadlines; entering results into LIMS; responding to client inquiries; and, ensuring specimens are properly and safety filed, stored, disposed of  and will operate laboratory equipment according to established standard operating procedures.

 

Requirements

  • Three year Community College diploma with a preferred emphasis on laboratory and science related courses with specialized training in light and electron microscopy, combined with 9-12 months of relevant experience, or an equivalent combination of education and experience.
  • Demonstrated knowledge of and working experience with, light and electron microscopes, crystallographic methods, x-ray microanalysis systems and, fourier transform infrared (FTIR) spectroscopy and infrared (IR) microscopes
  • Demonstrated ability to accurately identify composition of uroliths using the preceding methods
  • Exceptional organizational, communication and interpersonal abilities to work in a team environment with tight, client-driven deadlines; strong client service background and experience conferring with clients, combined with an understanding of the requirements of working in a client-focussed organization
  • Proven ability to accurately capture images using cameras and microscopes
  • Knowledge of ISO standards and QMS
  • Understanding of Health & Safety and WHMIS within a laboratory environment.
