General Description of Class: Under general supervision of the Manager, Technical Services, the incumbent maintains, installs, troubleshoots and calibrates all types of temperature, humidity, pressure and programmable controls on environmental/industrial control systems at the University of Toronto Scarborough. Typical Duties: The following illustrative tasks indicate the level of skill required and the extent of responsibility involved in this job. They in no way limit the incumbent to the tasks indicated: a) Inspects and tests the operation of control systems and life/safety monitoring systems to diagnose faults; b) Investigates and troubleshoots controls operational problems and determines best method to remedy issue; c) Removes, repairs, adjusts and replaces components; d) Calibrates components and control systems; e) Installs new control equipment on existing systems; f) Performs scheduled preventative maintenance work on control equipment and instruments and recommends replacement of control devices and updating DDC/DCS programs; g) Assists with the acquisition and maintenance of an adequate stock of control parts required for carrying out a regular preventative maintenance program; h) Works with Assistant Manager, Building Operating Engineers, and Trades staff to establish new or better means of controlling temperatures and humidity in buildings and experimental labs as required; i) Places primary emphasis on energy conservation by setting temperature controllers to achieve adequate environmental conditions while minimizing energy requirements; j) Maintains or revises maintenance procedures for newly installed equipment or instruments used for testing, measuring, monitoring and controlling flows, levels, pressures, temperatures and other variables. MINIMUM REQUIREMENTS: Education: Diploma from a recognized Ontario technical college as an Industrial/Commercial Instrumentation Technician or equivalent. Experience: Minimum of 5 years’ practical experience in the maintenance of DDC and DCS control systems; as well as, pneumatic, electromechanical, electronic, and programmable controllers related to building HVAC and Central Power Plant control systems. Preference will be given to those who hold a valid Instrumentation and Control Technician Certification (Interprovincial Red Seal Program). Skills: Personal computer skills in Windows, Word, Excel and programming knowledge in KMC (Wincontrol XL Plus), ABB (Composer, Conductor NT), VCI (Bactalk), Siemens (Apogee), Honeywell (Alerton) and Johnson Control (Metasys - CCT, GX9100, HVAC Pro). Ability to verify and calibrate various flow and BTU meters (used for billing). Other: Strong communication skills in English (written/oral), must be a team player and enjoy working in a structured team environment.
