Part-Time Academic (MARI 4215: Marine Plants in the 21st Century - Winter 2027) Posting Number PTAP3200P Department/Unit Biology Location Halifax, Nova Scotia, Canada Job Summary & Key Responsibilities The part-time academic will be responsible for teaching MARI 4215, "Marine Plants in the 21st Century" during the 2026/27 Winter Term.

This course focuses on the growing importance of habitat-forming marine plants, including seagrass meadows, saltmarshes, mangroves, kelp forests and other seaweed beds. It covers up-to-date issues around wild harvesting, aquaculture, blue carbon storage, bioprospecting, habitat restoration, ecosystem-based management, conservation efforts, and climate change. Class format includes overview lectures, case-studies, discussions, and interactive work.

Responsibilities include all aspects of teaching and administering the course, including lectures and tutorials, exam preparation, and evaluation of exams and assignments, handling student issues, submitting grades, hiring/supervising TA’s, etc. In addition, the part-time academic should expect to spend considerable time before and after the official course dates preparing and marking. 

Due to operational requirements, the successful applicant is required to work in-person on campus. This position reports to the Chair of the department.

Qualifications/Requirements of Position A graduate degree in Biology, Marine Biology or a related field and research experience directly related to the topic of the course. Preference will be given to candidates possessing a Ph.D. and/or previous university teaching experience in the subject of the course. Applications should include a letter, up-to-date C.V. First-time applicants should provide evidence of teaching effectiveness (such as summary of relevant course evaluations) and must provide the names of two references.
