General Purpose

The department of Student Experience is committed to supporting all students at the University of Guelph.  Student Experience houses many specialized supports for students identifying as First Nations, Inuit, Métis, Black, racialized, and/or members of the LGBTQ2IA+ community, and members of cultural, international, religious, and spiritual communities.  We welcome applicants sharing through their application the ways in which they believe they can contribute to the diversity of thought, approach, and practice in Student Experience.

 

Reporting to the Associate Director, Student Experience, the Cultural Diversity Advisor is a strategically important position for Black and racialized students .   The Cultural Diversity team works with Black and racialized students , with a particular emphasis on Black learners, to provide advising, mentoring, student advocacy, and social, cultural, and transition programs. 

 

Duties and Responsibilities

The Advisor supports the holistic development of Black and racialized students through individual and group-based advisement and support, mentoring, coaching, student advocacy, social, and cultural programs.  The work requires expertise in supporting students working through all forms of discrimination, oppression, and racism, and makes referrals to support services both on and off campus as appropriate.

 

The Advisor designs, delivers, and assesses a range of educational workshops, presentations, seminars and training activities for student staff, Black and racialized students, and the general student population on topics spanning identity development through to various dimensions of the student experience for Black and racialized students.

 

The Advisor acts as a lead for campus collaborations and liaises regularly with individuals, groups, faculty, staff, and departments across campus, and with off-campus organizations to develop a robust infrastructure to support Black and racialized student success and retention. 

 

The Advisor will supervise and provide direction for three Coordinators Cultural Diversity Services, as well as and approximately 3 part-time student staff and 4 Peer Helpers. 

 

The Advisor represents the department on University and community committees to provide expertise pertaining to the lived experience of Black and racialized students .  The incumbent contributes to the strategic direction and day-to-day operations of Student Experience and the Cultural Diversity unit, including participation in the development and implementation of action plans, annual budgeting, and forecasting processes for the unit.

 

Requirements

To be successful in this role, the incumbent is required to have:

  • A Master’s Degree in social work, social justice, race relations, higher education, or another related field, coupled with a minimum of 3 years of progressive experience working with Black and racialized populations.  
  • Understanding of the complexity of student identity, intersectionality, and education experiences -- including higher education, particularly the experiences of Black and racialized communities.
  • Strong understanding and practical experience applying anti-oppression and anti-racist principles in programs and services.
  • Expertise and practical experience in supporting and advocating on behalf of individuals working through all forms of oppression, discrimination, anti-Black racism, white supremacy, colonialism, racism, and colorism that is informed by both lived experience and practical experience working with Black and racialized communities.
  • Experience working with and advising Black and racialized populations.
  • Demonstrated skill in advising those in positions of authority regarding matters that impact the student experience of Black and racialized students.
  • Proven ability to assess needs and to research, design, implement, and evaluate programming, including educational and training programs and curricula.
  • Proven ability to exercise a high level of judgement, diplomacy, and tact.
  • Proven ability to respect and maintain confidentiality in sensitive and/or volatile situations.
  • Skills to effectively communicate with students who may be distressed or emotionally distraught, or who may face other difficulties.  
  • An ability to collaborate and lead amongst stakeholders and partners.
  • A strong aptitude in written, verbal, and non-verbal communication.
  • Intermediate to advanced level Microsoft365, MS Word, Excel and PowerPoint is also required.

The target hiring salary for this position is minimum and up to 96% of midpoint for the salary grade.
