About Us 

University College (UC) is the founding college of the University of Toronto. UC is home to over 5500 undergraduate students, who may study in any of the 330 academic programs offered by the Faculty of Arts and Science at the University of Toronto (U of T). The college also directs Canadian Studies, Cognitive Science, and Public Health -- interdisciplinary Arts and Science programs that challenge our students to excel intellectually -- and a suite of seminar courses called UC One: Engaging Toronto, which enable first-year students to apply their learning to the city around them.  

 

University College is located at the historic heart of U of T’s St. George campus in downtown Toronto. Our beautiful campus comprises the University College building, an architectural marvel and National Historic Site, as well as our three residences, and the UC Union. Affiliated with UC and sharing our spaces are the Centre for Drama, Theatre, and Performance Studies, the Mark S. Bonham Centre for Sexual Diversity Studies, and the Art Museum.

Your Opportunity 

Reporting to the Chief Administrative Officer (CAO), with dotted line reporting to the Dean of Students, the Manager Operations - UC Residence is responsible the three University College Buildings; which include Morrison Hall, Sir Daniel Wilson Residence, and Whitney Hall Residence, housing 720 undergraduate students. As well, this position manages the Commuter Student Centre, Union Building; Dean of Student Residence, Union Building. The position is responsible for assisting the CAO in identifying the direction, goals, and objectives for and managing of all infrastructure, maintenance and operations of these buildings.  

 

The Manager provides leadership and expertise in the planning, budgeting, execution, monitoring and evaluation of major and minor maintenance projects (in conjunction with the Property Manager) and oversight of these UC buildings including day-to-day maintenance and operations of facilities and the provision of outstanding customer service. The Manager is responsible for the ongoing assessment and refurbishing of residence facilities and equipment. This position identifies the direction, goals and objectives for all major and minor infrastructure and maintenance projects of the three UC Residences through regular communication, planning, and budgeting. This position is responsible for review of total  project cost and tender proposals, liaising with building managers, project managers, architects, internal trades and external contractors. 

 

In addition, the Manager develops and implements policies, systems and procedures to ensure that UC meets the highest standards in the delivery of service to the UC student community, visitors and summer business customers. The Manager ensures that UC meets the highest standards for environmental practices including waste management, materials recycling and energy efficiency. The Manager is responsible for managing the University College buildings in a manner consistent with maintaining an efficient facility that meets the needs of UC students, requirements of a university ancillary and meets the goals of the College.  This position also manages all CUPE Local 3261 staff engaged in performing maintenance and caretaking duties. 

 

EDUCATION: 

    • University degree with qualifications in facilities management, engineering or equivalent combination of education and experience.  
    • Knowledge of strategic planning, financial management, business management and project management required.   
    • Expertise in managing the complexities of a multi-purpose academic/residential building desirable. 


 

  1. EXPERIENCE: 



    • Minimum of four (4) years’ experience in facilities management. 
    • Extensive knowledge of building design, construction, engineering systems and operational practices.  
    • Demonstrated experience in managing maintenance budgets and performing financial analyses of alternatives. 
    • Experience with strategic planning with an emphasis on facilities renewal projects for older buildings.  
    • Demonstrated experience in health and safety issues, fire prevention, emergency planning and emergency response.  
    • Experience with management and supervision in a unionized environment required. 


 

  1. SKILLS: 



    • Superior project management skills. 
    • Proficient in using Microsoft Office (Word, Excel) and project management software, familiarity with specific facility systems (e.g., Salto, Star Rez) is necessary.
    • Knowledge of building and service contracts, and University contracting processes and practices.  
    • Familiar with formulating budgets and estimates, reviewing cost reports and preparing financial projections and analyses. 
    • Excellent verbal and written communication skills.
    • Exemplary leadership ability and experience required. Knowledge of labour, employment standards, health & safety, and sound management practice is essential. 
    • Demonstrated understanding of the Accessibility for Ontarians with Disabilities Act (AODA) laws and standards is essential. 


 

  1. OTHER: 



    • Superior written and verbal communication and presentation skills. Superior negotiating and mediating skills.  
    • Ability to work effectively with faculty, staff, students and members of the University community at large.
